What is Insulin?

Insulin is the storage hormone and sugar is the main source of food energy in the body. After consuming a meal, your body converts carbohydrates into glucose (sugar), and in order to use it the food as energy, the body’s cells need to "absorb the sugar." The glucose (sugar) then circulates the bloodstream and is used by all the body cells.

Our body has the limited capacity to store glycogen, and insulin stores the extra glucose (sugar) that the body doesn’t use.

What is Glycogen?

Do you know that the glycogen is formed from glucose? When the body is unable to store glycogen, the excess sugar (glucose) it is taken by insulin and is stored as fat in our body.

However, higher the insulin sensitivity, less insulin is required to store carbohydrates, while lesser the insulin sensitivity, a large amount of insulin is required to carry the carbohydrates around and releasing the fatty acids. Some scientific research suggests being "overweight" can cause "Insulin Resistance".


Insulin maintains the blood sugar level and when it is high, fats can be released. However, when the blood sugar levels get increasingly high, then the cells stop responding to insulin, and this is known as INSULIN RESISTANCE.

When this occurs, sugar remains in the bloodstream and fails to enter the cells. The pancreas then is unable to secrete sugar to the cells which cause the sugar to build excessively in the bloodstream. This leading to diabetes and pre-diabetes.

What is needed for fat loss?

For fat loss, high growth hormone and low insulin levels are needed. The growth hormone (GH) is responsible for metabolic functions. Insulin is released from the meals that contain proteins and carbohydrates, and it is related to the number of carbohydrates we consume and the glycemic index (GI means how quickly a carb can be digested in the body).

The higher the GI, the quicker the blood sugar level rises, and in return - to store that energy, the body releases more insulin.

How Does Saxenda Work In Improving Insulin Sensitivity?

Saxenda helps to lower the blood glucose levels while sensitizing the body to insulin levels. It can significantly reduce fasting blood glucose levels and fasting insulin levels.

Saxenda acts as a Glucagon Suppressant

Glucagon and GLP-1 are related to anorectic hormone and the glucagon also helps in increasing energy expenditure. The combination of these can help in losing weight through a reduction in food intake and an increase in energy outflow.

In terms of blood sugar level, glucagon is the exact opposite of insulin, as glucagon increases the blood sugar levels while insulin lowers it. By converting the glycerol into the fat cells, glucagon raises the blood sugar level. It also signals the fat cells to release fatty acids (Lipolysis).

What Happens when The Blood Sugar is Low?

When the blood sugar level is low, then the beta cells of the pancreas transfer glucagon via a "Glucagen Transporter" (GLUT2) This occurs between exercise and meals. It sources the liver to release the stored energy into motion. This is why the liver is essential for weight loss and liver needs to be able to work at maximum capacity. This explains the question often asked by clients - "Can they drink alcohol on a diet?" and why it is not a good idea.

Why is it important that Saxenda helps to reduce Glucagon?

In order to burn fat, the body should naturally reduce the storage of glycogen and reduce the insulin levels to activate the hormone-sensitive lipase. Because of insulin resistance, there is also some level of hyperglucagonemia and as a reason for this; it consistently increases the level of glucose. When the high glucogen interferes with normal glucose levels, it alters the energy-burning process.

I can conclude Saxenda helps to reduce the glucagon levels while consistently reducing the insulin resistance. It promotes normal glucose levels and helps in liver metabolism as well as help adipose tissues to burn fat.
